If you've been watching the news this week, you probably know about the flooding that has happened in Iowa. A subscriber to our newsletter who live out in the Midwest pointed out that the animal shelters in that area really need help too.
According to news reports the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter was significantly damaged during flooding, which forced the evacuation of all animals to Kirkwood Community College Animal Health Technology Center. They have been busy providing temporary care for pets whose owners had to evacuate and rescuing pets that have been stranded.
The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center has also been affected and has set up a temporary facility at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Although they have received many donations, they are still in need of outdoor chain link kennels. Apparently, their shelter is not salvageable, so they don't know where they will go when they have to leave the fairgrounds in July. You can donate money to them online through the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation site.
When disasters like floods strike, it's important to work together. News reports are comparing the animal displacement in Iowa with Hurricane Katrina. Even after the clean up is over, there will be an ongoing need for donations.
