Telling your "happy endings" stories isn't just about promoting you or making your volunteers feel good. It's about promoting adoption in general. You never know who will read your happy tales and how it will affect them. When people feel better about choosing the adoption option, we all win.

When you surf around humane sites, you really see how positive messages attract and negative messages repel. Instead of wasting energy tearing down others at every opportunity, we need to focus on building up our own organizations with positive messages that show the joys of adopting homeless pets.

Feedback and ideas for combating the stigma that surrounds homeless pets. A recurring theme is that the animals themselves are the best advertisement we have. So get out there and tell everyone what wonderful pets rescues are. And happy holidays to you ;-)

Rescues and shelters have a big PR problem. People obviously still think that if an animal is homeless, there must be something "wrong" with it. The problem is there are only so many altruistic people who want to save a life. Mostly it seems like we're preaching to the converted; folks like us who have adopted pets ourselves and understand how wonderful they are. But the word isn't spreading. How do we reach the unconverted and combat the stigma that surrounds homeless pets?

What are your plans for your rescue group in the coming year? If you want to raise more money or get more publicity in 2012, now is the time to start outlining your fundraising and publicity plans. Planning doesn't have to be intimidating. All you need is a calendar, some paper, and ideas.

November 13-19, 2011 is Pet Rescue and Adoption Week, which celebrates the human-animal bond and the people who are working to save homeless pets. During Pet Rescue and Adoption week, for each copy of Publicity to the Rescue sold, we're going to donate $5 to the rescue of the buyer's choice (they get to choose from a list of some of the rescues that were featured in the book). Please spread the word so more people will know how important the work you do really is!

One way to avoid burnout in rescue is to focus on those things you can do something about right now. Sometimes those things may seem small and insignificant. In fact, maybe you've heard the saying that you shouldn't "sweat the small stuff." That may be true of some things, but when it comes to your rescue, paying attention to the small stuff can make a huge difference to the animals.

How many times has someone talked to you and said something along the lines of "I'd love to help, but I don't have much time or money." You may have wondered what to say in response. You don't want to give the impression that you don't appreciate help or overwhelm the person with desperate pleas. Instead of just writing these people off as supporters, give them options.
