One way to avoid burnout in rescue is to focus on those things you can do something about right now. Sometimes those things may seem small and insignificant. In fact, maybe you've heard the saying that you shouldn't "sweat the small stuff." That may be true of some things, but when it comes to your rescue, paying attention to the small stuff can make a huge difference to the animals.

How many times has someone talked to you and said something along the lines of "I'd love to help, but I don't have much time or money." You may have wondered what to say in response. You don't want to give the impression that you don't appreciate help or overwhelm the person with desperate pleas. Instead of just writing these people off as supporters, give them options.

The tale of Leia the sickly black puppy in honor of Petfinder's Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable Pet Week. Anyone can adopt a fantastic dog like Leia. Black dogs are overlooked at shelters all the time. Give one of those “less adoptable” pets a chance!

One of my favorite parts of the Blog Paws conference was listening to Mike Arms from the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) during the "mini" Animal Center Education Services (ACES) workshop. After looking over my notes, I was able to decipher some of the gems he shared and included them in this blog post along with links to videos taken during the workshop.

Taking good photos of your adoptable animals is vital. Great pet photos capture the essence of the animal's personality and show what makes the pet special. When you look at a photo and it makes you smile, you know you have a winner. In my new book Publicity to the Rescue , one of the things I talk about is the importance of being ready for the media. One of the key steps is to have your Web site set up to virtually "greet" the members of the media. Unfortunately, many rescues have Web sites that are unprofessional at best and downright horrible at worst. (If your Web site sports Comic Sans, cheesy clip art, or has flashing anything, I'm talking to YOU!)

We often talk about "educating" people as if, once they knew the right thing to do for their animals, they'd do it. So here's my question for you: What do you do when smart people do stupid things? If they already know what they are doing is risking the animal's life, yet they continue to do it, what are you supposed to do?
