It can be difficult to find foster moms and dads who can handle the idea of taking in a furry critter temporarily and then giving the animal up for adoption. Those volunteers may be vital to your organization, but often they are few and far between. Outside of the sheltering and rescue world, most people don't even know what fostering IS. Your job is to tell them. That's where publicity can help!

Many rescue groups struggle to get get the word out about what they do, but it's not as difficult as it may seem to get noticed by the media. The key to getting publicity is to learn what makes the news. When you encounter news, whether online, in print, or on TV news, consider why the story was covered in the first place. How did the media outlet find out about it and why did they care? Then consider if there are elements of the story you could apply to your own situation.

Attacks on people working in shelters and rescues are happening now. When passions run long, often misinformation is the rule. In our highly connected world, a lot of people don't let facts get in the way of their agenda. People from across the country or across the world who have never met you or visited your facility can spew inaccurate vitriol for any reason (or no reason at all). Learn how to prepare yourself against attacks.

If you are one of the leaders of the group, you need to have a vision for what you want your rescue to look like in the future. Then you need to make sure everyone else shares the same vision for your organization too.

Get free PR by telling us about your best publicity/pr success stories for inclusion in blog posts, Blog Paws presentation, and a book. Also although many people thought the Adopt a Pet stamps were gone, you can still get them from the post office.

Upcoming teleseminar called "The Role of Major Gift Philanthropy at Your Local Animal Rescue" and a new project to keep cats out of shelters called the Happy Litterbox. "Inappropriate elimination" (aka cats NOT using the litterbox) is one of the biggest reasons cats are relinquished to shelters and abandoned. Usually it's because the owners don't know what do to or simply don't have the patience to figure out what's going on. The Happy Litterbox will showcase solutions and ideas for cat owners looking for solutions.
