If you're burned out, you just don't care anymore and feel like nothing you do will have any impact on anything. If you feel you are heading down the slippery slope toward burnout, here are a few ideas to help get you back on track. Read More »

The biggest issues facing rescue and humane organizations are not anything related to animals, but rather related to people. "Turf wars" and egos get in the way of forward progress to help homeless animals. Email just seems to exacerbate this problem. Spotting bitter, nasty people before problems escalate is challenging via email. This article has a few tips to help you recognize a sad, angry person (SAP) and keep her from ruining your day. I'm writing this a day later than usual because of the holiday. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. We had a good time cooking, crafting, and relaxing. (The canine and feline members of the family supervised our activities.) Because many people donate at the end of the year, you may be considering a few year-end fundraising appeals. In addition to the tips I wrote last week about how to write compelling copy, consider what your donors are thinking. Read More »

Because of my book Funds to the Rescue, I've been thinking and talking a lot about fundraising lately. One of the best ways to raise funds for the animals is through the power of the written word. However, a lot of people are afraid of writing or don't know where to start. Much has been written about copywriting for business, but less for the non-profit and humane fundraising world. Susan Daffron talks to Liz Keller from the Glen Wild Animal Rescue, which is based in Delaware County, New York. The topic of discussion is a 6-year old shepherd mix named Spike. Liz calls Spike the "Walter Matthau" of dogs -- kind of gruff on the outside when you first meet him, but then a total marshmallow once you get to know him. Read More »

When I did my fundraising workshop at the No More Homeless Pets Conference, I discussed the issue of working with volunteers. I asked folks in the audience (about 250 people) to raise their hand if they'd ever had problems with volunteers. Pretty much every hand shot up. Although it can't help with the inevitable personality conflicts, I recently found out about a new tool that can help with some of the logistics related to managing volunteers. Read More »

Susan Daffron talks to Kunzang Drolma about a dog named Pipi who is available for adoption from Tara's Babies Animal Welfare, an animal sanctuary located in Northern Arizona. Tara's Babies was formed after Hurricane Katrina. A group of volunteers went to help and brought back 130 animals to the former ranch land in Dakini Valley. The volunteers realized that even after the Katrina dogs were adopted, the need for a sanctuary was not over. So today, 36 dogs live at the sanctuary. Read More »

Over the weekend, I was at the Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Conference where I presented a workshop on fundraising that was based on my book Funds to the Rescue. Then I went to Utah to visit the Best Friends sanctuary. Being among so many "animal people" was an amazing experience. I can't remember when I've laughed and cried so much in a 5-day period of time.
