Over the weekend, I was at the Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Conference where I presented a workshop on fundraising that was based on my book Funds to the Rescue. Then I went to Utah to visit the Best Friends sanctuary. Being among so many "animal people" was an amazing experience. I can't remember when I've laughed and cried so much in a 5-day period of time.

Assuming the airlines cooperate, by the time you read this I'll be in Las Vegas for the Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Conference. I'll be busily freaking out about my workshop presentation, so hey, wish me luck! Since I'm writing this post ahead of time, I thought I'd expand a bit on last week's topic. Creating a great Web site for your organization doesn't have to be complicated. Many people are intimidated by the "techie" aspect, but the most important decisions you make about your site don't have anything to do with nerdy matters. I have created many Web sites (including the one for NAPRP) and co-authored a book called Web Business Success: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Web Sites That Work. So here are a few Web site design tips from the trenches:

This week, we had a teleseminar with Kimberly Sanberg from Ignitus, who did a great job explaining how you can integrate direct mail with social media. One thing that came up during the call is the importance of having all your "ducks in a row" before you embark on an integrated campaign. If you want to use social media, you should have a Web site and email system set up first, so you can communicate online. A lot of social media is about simply starting a conversation that leads to people visiting your Web site where they can learn more about what you do. As Kimberly pointed out, when they get to your Web site, you don't want them to run away!

Susan Daffron talks to Vicky Caponiti from the Partnership for Animal Welfare (PAW) about a tri-colored border collie mix named Mickey who is available for adoption. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, PAW is a non-profit group of volunteers who take homeless pets out of animal shelters and find them new homes. Most of the dogs are in foster care and attend adoption shows in the suburban Maryland area. Although his prior owner neglected him, after some medical help from the folks at PAW, Mickey is now a healthy, happy dog who is always a big "hit" at the adoption shows because he just loves everybody.

Because I'm going to be traveling at the end of next week, it feels like our October teleseminar is coming right on the heels of our last one. But it's a great follow-on because the topic builds on our recent social media teleseminar. On Tuesday October 13 at 1 pm (Pacific), Kimberly L. Sanberg from Ignitus will do a presentation called "Proven Integrated Fundraising Techniques." She'll be explaining how you can engage your supporters and reach your fundraising goals by integrating traditional fundraising techniques like direct mail with online media like email and Facebook to create an engaged community of passionate supporters.

The teleseminar we had on Tuesday with Jessica Stout on social media was great! I hope you were able to attend. Jessica shared a ton of ideas about how you can use social media to increase adoptions, donations, and awareness. Plus, she had some tips for crafting your social media strategies and policies. (If you missed it and you're a Golden Paw Insider member, you can download the MP3 audio, which we uploaded to the Web site this morning.) One thing that came out of the teleseminar was that even though sites like Facebook and Twitter can be great tools (and the price is right!), social media needs to be just one aspect of your fundraising and publicity plans.
